Overview

A chic seaside retreat with uninterrupted views across Seahouses harbour to the Farne Islands.

The perfect spot for indulging in beach adventures, the bustling charm of Seahouses and voyages to the Farne Islands

With its prime spot on Seahouses harbour, Farne View is the perfect spot for guests seeking the quintessential seaside holiday. Seahouses is widely regarded as one of the UK’s most popular seaside towns, blending the reassuring bustle of a small fishing harbour with mile upon mile of unspoilt sandy beaches in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Farne View places all that Seahouses has to offer right on your doorstep, adding immaculately presented interiors in light, neutral tones peppered with nautical touches and pops of colour. Snuggle up by the electric fire after bracing autumn and winter beach walks or, in the warmer months, fold back the French doors to let the sea air into the open-plan living area and enjoy al fresco dining on the sheltered, sunny balcony to the rear.

The dual aspect, open-plan living area that spans the first floor of Farne View enables guests to kick back and watch the comings and goings of the picturesque harbour from the comfort of the sofa. The well-appointed kitchen is set slightly back from the spacious living area and provides easy access to the dining table, which comfortably seats six guests.

On the ground floor, you’ll find three compact but well-presented bedrooms (one double, one twin, one bunk). Each bedroom capitalises on space and features lovely little nautical design features, with two adding harbour views.

Beyond the fishing boats that bob in Seahouses harbour lie the magical Farne Islands, home to one of England’s foremost seabird colonies and a large grey seal colony. Get acquainted with the islands and their residents by strolling down to the harbour and hopping on a guided boat trip. The comforting flash of Longstone Lighthouse on Outer Farne serves as a poignant reminder of local heroine Grace Darling, famous for her courageous exploits rescuing shipwreck survivors with her father during a storm in 1838.

In addition to serving as the gateway for sea voyages to the Farne Islands, Seahouses is ideally positioned for exploring the attractions and sights of the wider Northumberland coast. Enjoy lazy lunches in convivial pubs, wander along dune-fringed beaches, learn to kite-surf or simply relax with a glass of bubbly as you watch the sun sink into the sea from your private balcony.

Location

Farne View is within easy walking distance of the shops, cosy pubs, cafes and restaurants of this pretty coastal village, with plenty of good eating options right on the harbour area. Experience the rich maritime connections of The Old Ship Inn for tasty food and a good selection of real ales; or the Bamburgh Castle Inn situated above the old lime kilns by the harbour is another popular choice serving a menu full of fresh local flavours with lovely panoramic sea views from its terrace and beer garden. There is always a fresh supply of fish and seafood on the restaurant menus in this area, and fans of the traditional British takeaway can savour some of the best lightly battered fish and chips whilst watching the comings and goings of life on the quayside here.

Most of the shopping in Seahouses is on the Main Street which has a newsagents, bakery, chemist, fishmongers, olde-worlde sweet shop, as well as gift shops and a small Co-op supermarket. More extensive shopping, local producers, and a number of large supermarkets can be found in the historic market town of Alnwick which sits just 15 miles south of Seahouses.

Activities

No visit to this area should go by without a visit to the Farne Islands, and a recent accolade by Sir David Attenborough should leave you in no doubt as to its credentials when he declared it his favourite place in the UK to capture nature at its very best. Charters from the harbour run every day (weather permitting) and you will be enthralled by the thousands of breeding sea-birds and seals taking up every square foot of this incredible rocky outcrop, including over 37,000 pairs of characterful Puffins. The diving around this area is also a real treat with crystal clear waters, rich marine life, and numerous wrecks to explore, including the presence of those ever inquisitive grey seals!

There are beaches to the north and the south of the village, with the most popular being to the north, featuring great sweeping curves of white sand running almost seamlessly to Bamburgh and Budle Bay. This stretch is popular with families and is just made for lazy picnics and days out with a bucket and spade. Overlooked by the spectacular outline of Bamburgh Castle, you will find good local amenities around this area with toilet facilities, cafes and plenty of ice-cream stops.

Surfing and windsurfing is highly rated here with waves naturally breaking to the left and right as a result of numerous sandbars along its length, and while there is no lifeguard cover on this section, it is seen as a safe spot for swimming. Three miles south of Seahouses, you will find excellent watersports on the golden sands of Beadnell Bay where you can launch boats, rent surfboards, wetsuits and bikes or try your hand at kitesurfing, windsurfing, sea canoeing and waterskiing with accredited instructors.

For young explorers, pack a fishing net and spend a happy few hours rock-pooling for hermit crabs on the ‘Tumblers’, a rocky intertidal shore immediately adjacent the harbour at Seahouses, or head to Bamburgh Lighthouse at Harkness Rocks named by Countryfile as one of the top ten British rockpooling areas. Other child-friendly activities include the Seahouses Treasure Trail, a self-guided route which involves solving clues across the area to crack the final mystery - a fun way to spend a few hours, see the sights and keep family entertained.

For walking and cycling, the area offers some of the finest coastal routes in the country. The Northumberland Coastal Path and National Cycle Route 1 run right through this stretch taking in incredible cliff-top scenery and sandy beaches, interspersed with dramatic castles and pretty coastal villages with art galleries and craft shops. A little further inland will take you to a huge network of trails and waymarked routes involving gentle circular routes through scenic Border country to challenging long-distance trails amidst the dramatic beauty of the Northumberland National Park.

Visitors will be enchanted by the rich heritage of the area, where exceptional castles and grand stately homes punctuate the landscape all the way down the coast - Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Chillingham and Alnwick to name but a few. Follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne to complete the final journey of St. Cuthbert, or simply sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views from the sheltered dune-fringed sands of this uniquely special place.

Reviews

"Fabulous stay in Seahouses with a fantastic view of the harbour and the Farne Islands, with wonderful sunsets and nature watching. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and well appointed. The opportunity to sample some Northumbrian hamper gifts was welcome too."

Ms Crump

"So well equipped and beautifully furnished to a very high standard and ultimately an ever changing view over Seahouses harbour - Farne View is just perfect for a memorable holiday in this lovely area. There are so many places to visit and the fish and chips are a must. We will be returning I’m sure."

Bailey family

"Just to let you know that everybody thoroughly enjoyed their stay in Farne View. Everything was spot on as usual. All in all, a perfect holiday."

Musgrave family

"We had a lovely time in Seahouses and Farne View was very homely and cosy with a superb view! It had everything you could possibly need. Would definitely book again, had a great time and the coastline and attractions are stunning."

Monaghan family

"We had a perfect couple of weeks in Farne View. Couldn't have asked for more. It is the little things that you remember, like the postcard welcome from the owner's niece, the delightful welcome pack and the owner popping round to see if everything was OK. Truly lovely."

Musgrave family

"A lovely house, well appointed, equipped and lots of nice little touches/details. It's the view over the harbour that's the USP though! And Seahouses is a real joy amidst the joy of the wonderful Northumbria coast."

Campbell family

"I can’t think of a single thing that was a problem with the accommodation and the personal touches my father received for his birthday, just topped off his week. So thank you for such a fantastic place and you will be seeing us again"

Haynes family

"We are now at home after a lovely relaxing week at Farne View. Please pass on “thanks” to the owner. The property really is very quiet, relaxing and convenient for walks, shops and a couple of very nice pubs. Despite the weather we managed walks to Bamburgh, Beadnell and Newton Links. The Landing Cafe at Beadnell was a pleasant surprise. Welcoming and lovely food. The Seahouses Cafe at the round about is great - good coffee, excellent cheese scones and breakfasts - perfect for the last morning after “checking out”."
