Location

Despite Lanton’s rural location there are good local amenities nearby. The estate is seven miles from the pretty town of Wooler which offers a good range of independent shops including two excellent butchers, a very good delicatessen, several pubs and cafes and the highly rated Milan Restaurant.

Cornhill on Tweed is eight miles from the estate and offers an excellent village shop selling pies and delicious local goodies and the Collingwood Arms which has a super bar and restaurant specialising in dishes prepared using the wealth of local produce on offer. More extensive shopping including a good range of independent shops, pubs and restaurants are available at Kelso 14 miles away.

Activities

Fabulous walks from the doorstep range from leisurely rambles along the Bowmont Water and surrounding farmland to 600 miles of designated hill and moorland routes in the Cheviot Hills. The St Cuthbert’s Way and the Pennine Way are also nearby.

Cyclists are equally well provided for with miles of marked routes and quiet country lanes to explore offering everything from meandering river valley saunters to wild open moorland blasts. The Cheviots offer some of the best mountain biking in the country and the Pennine Cycleway and the Reivers Cycle Route both run through the National Park.

Dogs and horses are welcome at Crookhouse and stabling is available. The local bridle paths provide access to some of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of Northumberland. The stables at Kimmerston just down the road also offer riding in the Cheviot Hills as well as rides on the spectacular sandy beaches on nearby Holy Island.

There is low key fishing on the River Glen which runs through the estate. For more serious fishing, the cottage is only a fifteen drive from the River Till one of the area's best kept secrets with an impressive sea trout run each spring. The lower and bottom beats of the legendary River Tweed are also within easy driving distance. Walked up and driven shooting is also available on the Lanton Estate and on neighbouring estates.

Golf fans are no less well provided for with golf courses nearby including links courses at Bamburgh and Goswick, parkland courses at Wooler and Belford and the sublime Roxburghe Championship Golf Course just outside Kelso.

Some of the cleanest and emptiest beaches in England can be found on Northumberland's spectacular Heritage Coastline nearby. One of our favourite spots is Bamburgh Beach, with miles of pristine sand nestled behind huge sand dunes. At low tide take a trip across the causeway to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne or take a boat to the Farne Islands to see the resident colonies of Grey Seals and an impressive array of birdlife including Puffins.

The stunning coastline provides the perfect opportunity to try your hand at kite surfing, sailing or coasteering. For something a little different, gliding is available at nearby Millfield. Clay pigeon shooting and archery are also available locally and beginners are very welcome.

Also nearby is the Ford and Etal estate where one can have a wander around the ruins of Etal Castle or enjoy a pint at Northumberland’s only thatched pub before taking the delightful miniature steam railway which runs to Heatherslaw to explore the corn mill and buy some delicious Heatherslaw biscuits.

The region’s rich history is reflected in the magnificent chain of castles that punctuate the landscape. Those nearby the cottage include dramatic Bamburgh, perched high on its rocky outcrop, the vast, romantic ruins of Dunstanburgh, the palatial splendour of Floors, Chillingham, reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in England and home to the world’s only herd of wild cattle, and foreboding Alnwick, made famous as the location for Hogwart’s School in the Harry Potter films.

Further afield, the magnificent city of Edinburgh is only about an hour by car or 45 minutes on the train from nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Reviews

"I celebrated a wonderful 80th birthday with my family at Bowmont and College cottages. Everything in the cottages was of the highest order and the location was spectacular. Even the weather was amazingly benign for mid-February. Many thanks for giving us a great holiday."

Mr Forrest

"Thanks so much, we had a great time and the cottage was lovely. My wife is keen to come back, so you may well be hearing from us again!"

Mr O'Donnell

"It was lovely! 2nd time we've stayed there and I hope won't be the last. Utterly gorgeous, especially the wood burner and the beautiful quality bedding. Thank you."

Ms Slater

"Yet again the owners and estate staff have made our welcome amazing. Please pass on our thanks to the housekeeper and her team. They have made our stay fantastic. The “Welcome” pack, the clean cottage and their professionalism has been brilliant. We will be back to enjoy what is an outstanding holiday “home”. Thank you to all at Crabtree & Crabtree for your help."

Mr & Mrs Reed

"I can safely say that my entire family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at College Cottage. We have booked a number of your properties in the past and each and every time we have been happy with the comfort and level of décor in your cottages. In particular, what we loved about College Cottage was how secluded it was and how spectacular the scenery was. The lack of phone signal was actually a bonus as far as we were concerned, as it allowed us time to shut ourselves away from the our normal busy schedule and instead spend some quality time with our family. The only down side to our holiday was that it simply was not long enough! We look forward to booking another property with Crabtree & Crabtree once again in the near future."

Leach family

"We had a marvellous time at College Cottage, made all the more lovely by the immaculate presentation and Christmas decorations! We are already thinking about where to spend next Christmas with a slightly larger group and would like to visit the area again before then so I'm sure we'll be in touch soon! Thank you for making our holiday really special at a very difficult time for the family, we all really appreciated it."

Laing family

"We had a fantastic time at College cottage! Our party consisted of myself, my sister and my brother and our other halves, and two dogs. The accommodation was perfect, especially the luxury of a bathroom per couple! It's fair to say that the property is off the beaten track, but the views were amazing, and well worth the drive and the four cattle grids! This is a beautiful time of year to visit The Borders. We will definitely use Crabtree & Crabtree again. All of your cottages look stunning! Looking forward to the next time!"

Harman family

"We had a lovely stay. The cottage provided all we needed. Great space and location. The welcome pack a lovely idea. The kitchen was very well resourced. Plenty of information on local attractions, etc."

Shaw family

"We had a lovely time. The cottage is gorgeous and unlike many other places we have stayed at there really was enough space for 7 people, the kitchen was well equipped and over all we could not fault it. We give it 10/10 and have already discussed going back next new year! Thank you to Crabtree & Crabtree for their excellent work and help in having made this a truly fabulous holiday!"

Hutchison family

"The accommodation was first class and the housekeeper could not have been more helpful and welcoming. My wife and I would definitely recommend this cottage to our friends and family. We have stayed in over fifty cottages over the years and this one was the very best."

Pennington family

"We had a lovely weekend at your cottage. The cottage was lovely as always and very clean on arrival. It’s a lovely location and we are looking forward to returning in the near future."

Harvey family
