A warm, well-presented, town centre property ideal for families, groups and fishing parties with excellent local amenities on the doorstep. Ideally placed for golfing in the stunning parkland setting of The Hirsel; salmon fishing on prime lower Tweed beats; scenic walking in the National Park and just a twenty minute drive from the stunning Northumberland heritage coastline.

The Antlers’ spacious accommodation is presented in a cosy country style with a comfortable sitting room and convivial dining kitchen opening onto a small, sheltered patio garden with outside dining area.

Upstairs are four individually-styled bedrooms which provide good flexibility with two rooms offering zip and link beds in addition to two double rooms. Two of the bedrooms are en suite and the other two share a family bathroom with feature bath.Children will enjoy spotting the antlers which feature throughout the house in many different guises!

Local amenities

Coldstream is a quaint but bustling little town sitting on the north side of the River Tweed right on the Scottish/English Border. It has an incredibly rich past, giving its name to The Coldstream Guards, the oldest serving regiment in British military history, and sits close to Flodden Field, site of the infamous battle of 1513.

Surrounded by superb countryside with wonderful views, yet with Coldstream’s shops, pubs and cafes right on the doorstep, guests to this area get to experience the best of both worlds. The shopping here is small and friendly with a good mix of independent outlets running the length of the High Street.

The Coldstream Gallery is a lovely spot to browse art, ceramics and jewellery by local artists and designers, or pop into Calico Interiors for lifestyle gifts and accessories before coffee and cake at the charmingly named ‘Mad Hatter’ nearby. There is a family butchers, bakery and small Co-op supermarket for holiday provisions, or head to the Cornhill Village Shop (1.5 miles) for scrummy picnic lunches, hampers, local produce and home baking. More extensive shopping and amenities can be found in the picturesque town of Kelso (9 miles) which is also home to the 12th Century Abbey, Floors Castle, the Roxburghe Championship Golf Course and National Hunt Racing.

For eating out, you will receive a cheery welcome at The Besom Inn on the High Street for traditional pub fayre, or The Collingwood Arms at Cornhill is an elegant setting for lingering lunches or fine evening dining. A little further afield, the Allanton Inn at Allanton or the Wheatsheaf at Swinton are both renowned for serving dishes full of fresh local flavours amidst relaxed, convivial surroundings.

Activities and attractions

For general recreation and walking, The Hirsel Estate and Country Park is a gem of a spot sitting just on the edge of the town with artisan workshops, a small museum, cosy tearoom and lovely waymarked walks around the lake and through estate parkland. In springtime, acres of snowdrops and daffodils blanket the grounds, and The Dundock Path is particularly stunning in late May or early June when the rhododendrons and azaleas burst into glorious colour. The woodland and riverside trails are wonderful in all seasons with an abundance of bird-watching and wildlife spotting opportunities including otters, kingfisher and over 170 different bird species. Visit in autumn and you will be rewarded with sensational colours and the sight of thousands of geese, ducks and gulls making their way to overwinter on The Hirsel Lake.

There are eight other designated walking routes around the area ranging in length from 1.5 miles to 11 miles, taking in town features such as the Coldstream Museum, Henderson Gardens, Flodden Memorial and panoramic viewpoints over the River Tweed. For those seeking high energy treks or mountain biking, a short drive of 6.5 miles will take you to the edge of the Northumberland National Park where you can experience the endless traffic-free trails and dramatic landscape of the Cheviot Hills.

With prime Lower Tweed beats just a few minutes' drive from the house, including Birgham, The Lees, Learmouth, Tillmouth and Lennel, the property is an ideal base for fishing parties. Salmon fishing - day rods or weekly lets - can be booked through FishTweed, and permits for brown trout and grayling fishing are available from the newsagents in the town or the Cornhill Village Shop. For golf fans, The Hirsel is an 18 hole, par 70 course in a scenic parkland setting on the outskirts of the town and features wide generous fairways but with some tricky hazards which will both challenge and delight! Visitors are very welcome and golf packages can be tailored to suit all requirements.

For sightseeing, the property is an ideal base for exploring the Tweed Valley, with its magnificent countryside steeped in a turbulent and romantic history and punctuated by imposing castles, including Floors, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Thirlestane and Alnwick, the evocative ruins of abbeys at Kelso, Melrose and Dryburgh and the grand stately homes and gardens of nearby Paxton, Manderston and Mellerstain.

The stunning Northumberland coast is just a twenty minute drive with miles of pristine sandy beaches perfect for rest or play. With plenty of family-friendly activities, including horse-riding, body-boarding, canoeing, surfing or a simple game of beach cricket, there really is something for everyone. Edinburgh is within easy driving distance, just over an hour by car or 45 minutes on the train from nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Garden and grounds
There is a small fully-enclosed, patio garden to the rear of the property with furniture for outside dining.

There is free on street parking on the High Street very close to the cottage. There is also a free car park directly opposite and another further down the High Street.

Wi-Fi and mobile coverage
Coldstream is a BT Wi-Fi hot spot. Guests can sign up to Wi-Fi for £10 per day or £25 for 5 days. If you are a BT customer there is no charge to use the Wi-Fi. You will need your BT log in details.

Guest amenities
The beds are made up with hypoallergenic duvets and pillows. A hair dryer is supplied in the master bedroom. Bath sheets and hand towels are provided for all guests. Guest soap and shower gel are provided.

Two travel cots and high chair are available on request.

The Antlers can be taken on a purely self-catered basis, or a cook is available throughout guest’s stay, for breakfasts or dinners only or to provide one-off celebratory meals for a special occasion. A homemade meal delivery is available which is popular for guest’s first night and wine delivery is available in conjunction with renowned wine merchants Corney & Barrow.

Regretfully The Antlers is not suitable for dogs.

Guest privacy
The Antlers is in the centre of Coldstream with excellent amenities on the doorstep and the degree of privacy and background noise as one would expect from a town centre property. The ground floor is double glazed which minimises any noise from the street.
